Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are custom restorations crafted of attractive, durable dental materials. A crown can be used to replace a missing tooth, cover a tooth after root canal therapy, protect a damaged tooth, anchor a dental bridge, or cap a dental implant. When provided by a talented restorative dentist like Dr. Carnazza, a crown can help restore both attractiveness and functionality to your smile.

Placement of Dental Crowns

Placing a dental crown is a relatively straightforward process. During the procedure, Dr. Carnazza designs  the tooth  to accommodate the crown (if necessary), bonds the crown to the tooth, and assures its fit with the opposing teeth and bite.

Types of Crowns

There are several types of crowns: gold, porcelain fused to gold, and all ceramic. Gold crowns are most often used on the teeth in the posterior part of the mouth, since gold is stronger (albeit less natural looking) than ceramic materials. Ceramic crowns, while attractive enough for use on the anterior teeth, cannot usually withstand the wear and tear of chewing. They are therefore not usually placed on the back teeth. Finally, porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns can be used on both the front teeth or  back teeth.

Dental Bridges

When there is a gap between teeth left by a missing tooth, a dental bridge can be used to hold an artificial tooth (or several artificial teeth) in the gap. Dental bridges are an aesthetically pleasing, relatively inexpensive option for restoring function to the smile.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is comprised of an artificial tooth and an abutment, or anchor,  on either side of the artificial tooth. The bridge is bonded to the natural teeth adjacent to the gap via dental crowns to anchor the artificial tooth.

Placement of Dental Bridges

The placement process for dental bridges involves two stages: designing  crowns on the adjacent teeth and then placing the bridge. These stages are usually performed in two or three dental visits, which allows time for the dental laboratory to custom-craft the patient's prosthesis. With proper maintenance, bridges can last for many years.

Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are the first defense against the problems caused by tooth decay, which can include tooth pain, sensitivity to heat and cold, and infected root canals. Fillings replace decay with strong dental material, thereby eliminating the decay and strengthening the tooth. Carnazza Dental Medicine provides attractive composite (tooth-colored) fillings  as well as porcelain and gold inlays.

Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

Since tooth-colored fillings are custom-blended to match the natural tooth structure, they blend beautifully with the teeth and are not conspicuous in the mouth. The composite materials do not pose many of the health hazards or cause the tooth sensitivity associated with traditional metal (amalgam) fillings. Moreover, white fillings can be used in cosmetic dentistry as part of a total smile makeover.

Dental Fillings - the Procedure

Placing a filling is a relatively quick, simple procedure, which  Dr. Carnazza can do painlessly with the Waterlase dental laser . Meaning no needle injection in most cases. Whether it be a composite filling placed directly at the time the tooth is designed or a two visit process for inlays.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are among the most advanced restorative dentistry options available. They are proven successful for over 40 years. Dr.Carnazza is trained in both surgical and prosthetic dental rehabilitation. He is a fellow in the International Congress of Oral Implantology. This is a title which is achieved after performing numerous surgical and prosthetic cases of dental implantology.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are used to treat teeth with extensive tooth decay. Inlays and onlays are constructed of tooth-colored porcelain or gold in a dental laboratory. They are custom-crafted to precisely fit the cavity, thereby eliminating tooth decay while strengthening the tooth.
