Reduce Dental Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry – Brooklyn, Long Island, and Surrounding Areas
Do you experience anxiety when you think about going to the dentist? Do you avoid scheduling dental appointments because of this anxiety? If so, consider sedation dentistry available to our patients at Carnazza Dental Medicine. Sedation dentistry involves the use of sedatives to put patients in a calm, relaxed state before dental procedures. With dental sedation, you can sit back and relax in the dentist's chair in total tranquility. Dental Sedation Options
We provide two dental sedation options: nitrous oxide and (IV) sedation with a dental anesthesiologist. The type of sedative we use for each patient depends on the type of procedure, their level of anxiety, and whether he or she has any health-related restrictions.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, or "laughing gas," is an inhalation sedative. It provides a light sedative effect in which the patient is conscious yet completely calm and relaxed. The nitrous is administered at the beginning of the procedure, and the anesthetic is administered once the nitrous has taken effect. Laughing gas is most often used for relatively minor procedures such as root canal therapy, fillings, and placement of dental crowns and bridges.
Intravenous Sedation
Intravenous (IV) sedation is an intravenous sedative used in more complex procedures such as the placement of porcelain veneers and dental implants. It provides a greater degree of sedation than nitrous gas; the patient is completely sedated (many patients have no memory of the procedure) yet able to respond to simple commands during the procedure. The sedative is administered at the beginning of the procedure, and the anesthetic is administered once the sedative has taken full effect. This is done under the supervision of a board certified anesthesiologist.
